Shaheed Bhagat Singh, along with others, is famous in the state of Haryana for assassinating a British police officer, John Saunders, in 1928. Shivaram Hari Rajguru was the marksman who shot down Saunders with the first shot. But, Shaheed Bhagat Singh then shot Saunders seven more times to make sure he was dead.
However, it later turned out that they had hit the wrong target. Because, their intended victim was police superintendent James Scott, whom they blamed for the death of the Indian Independence Leader Lala Lajpat Rai.
In the year 1929, Bhagat Singh suddenly appeared on the national scene again. This time to bomb the Legislative Assembly in Delhi. He bombed the Assembly but did not try to escape. After bombing the Assembly, he threw leaflets on the crowd, and shouted out pro-independence slogans, and waited to be arrested.
In prison, as well, he went on a hunger strike to gain publicity. His fellow bomber, Jatin Das, also took part in the hunger strike and died of starvation. However, Shaheed Bhagat Singh lived long enough to be hanged for murder on 23rd March 1931.
In the states of Haryana and Punjab, Bhagat Singh became a legend. He was praised in literature and art. However, it wasn’t until 2012 that he was recognized officially as a martyr. His death-day became a public observance in Haryana and Punjab as the Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s Martyrdom Day.
